KabasphOur Cellulose Acetate Butyrate CAB-381-20 is a cellulose ester with medium butyryl content and high viscosity. Other than a higher viscosity and higher molecular weight, CAB-381-20 cellulose ester shares the same general characteristics as CAB-381-0.1 and CAB-381-0.5. CAB-381-20 offers a combination of solubility and compatibility, moisture resistance, excellent surface hardness and good film strength. When CAB-381-20 is dissolved in appropriate solvents a clear, colorless solution is produced.
Our CAB-381-20 is a CAB product with exceptionally balanced performance and extremely broad applicability. Its core advantages can be summarized as follows:
1. Exceptional solubility and compatibility. CAB-381-20 dissolves readily in numerous inexpensive and common solvents, including ketones (acetone, methyl ethyl ketone), esters (ethyl acetate, butyl acetate), and ether esters (acetic acid methyl ether acetate). This offers significant formulation flexibility. Also CAB-381-20 exhibits excellent compatibility with numerous other resins (e.g., acrylic, polyester, amino, polyurethane). This enables its use as a “modifier” or “co-resin” in diverse coating systems to enhance overall performance.
2. Excellent Flow and Anti-Sag Properties. CAB-381-20 effectively reduces the surface tension of coatings, facilitating smoother flow after application. This results in a smooth, level, high-gloss film with reduced surface defects like orange peel. Simultaneously, our CAB-381-20 exhibits outstanding thixotropy—high viscosity at rest that decreases under application shear. This perfectly resolves sagging issues during vertical spraying, allowing thicker wet films to be applied in a single pass.
3. Extremely Rapid Solvent Release and Drying Speed. The molecular structure of CAB-381-20 promotes accelerated solvent release. Coatings incorporating CAB-381-20 achieve exceptionally short “finger-dry” times, significantly boosting production efficiency, minimizing dust adhesion, and enabling seamless integration into automated production lines. Furthermore, this rapid solvent release minimizes solvent retention within the coating layers, effectively reducing “blistering” defects caused by solvent evaporation during baking.
4. Outstanding Weather Resistance and Anti-Yellowing Properties. Our CAB-381-20 inherently possesses strong UV resistance, effectively delaying film aging and chalking. Its butyryl group provides superior hydrolysis resistance compared to pure cellulose acetate, ensuring more stable film performance in humid environments. CAB-381-20 itself has a very light color, resulting in high-transparency varnishes that maintain long-term gloss retention.
5. Superior Control of Metallic Effect Alignment. When coatings contain effect pigments such as aluminum powder or pearlescent pigments, CAB-381-20 facilitates highly oriented, substrate-parallel alignment of these flake pigments within the paint film. This alignment produces a uniform, bright, and sparkling metallic luster effect (bright at the front angle, dark at the side angle, known as the “flop” effect), significantly enhancing the product's aesthetic appeal and premium quality.
6. Enhanced Hardness and Abrasion Resistance. Our CAB-381-20 delivers a hard, scratch-resistant coating surface while maintaining sufficient flexibility to prevent brittle cracking.

Leveraging its superior metal pigment orientation capability and fast drying properties, CAB-381-20 serves as one of the core resins for high-end automotive metallic and pearlescent paints. Also based on its fast-drying characteristics perfectly align with the operational pace of repair shops.
2. Wood Coatings. Used for furniture, musical instruments, etc., delivering fast-drying, high-gloss, high-transparency surface coatings with excellent leveling properties.
3. Plastic Coatings. Used on mobile phones, home appliances, automotive interior components, etc., delivering hard, wear-resistant, aesthetically pleasing decorative and protective coatings.
4. Inks and Composites. Used in flexible packaging inks, providing fast drying and adhesion.
5. Serves as a toughening agent or surface coating for composites (e.g., carbon fiber).
Package & Storage:
20kgs/ctn with an inner PE bag, palletized: 6ctns/layer, 10 layers(60ctns)/pallet. Loadability in container 20'/40' (Palletized): 12000kg / 24000kg.
Store at room temperature. Keep package closed after using. Based on our experience the shelf life of this product under above conditions is at least 2 years.
If it exceeds the 2-year shelf life, it can continue to be used after passing the test.
