Sodium Pyrithione for Antimicrobial and Antifungal Protection

Sodium Pyrithione (NaPT; C₅H₄NOSNa), also known as Pyrithione Sodium, is an antimicrobial and antifungal compound supplied as a white to off-white powder or a stable 40% liquid solution, readily soluble in water and ethanol. It is effective against molds such as Aspergillus niger and bacteria such as E. coli, and is widely used in cosmetics, coatings, textiles, leather, water treatment, and marine antifouling as a preservative, bactericide, and dyeing auxiliary. Its broad-spectrum action involves chelating essential metal ions (e.g., Fe²⁺, Cu²⁺), disrupting microbial cell membranes, and inhibiting ATP synthesis. Sodium Pyrithione, with the chemical formula C₅H₄NSNaO, is an antimicrobial and antifungal compound, also known as Pyrithione Sodium. The pure substance appears as a white or off-white powder, readily soluble in water and ethanol. It is commonly formulated as a 40% liquid solution and remains stable under al kaline or neutral conditions.

It demonstrates significant inhibitory effects against molds such as Aspergillus niger and bacteria such as E. coli, and is widely used in cosmetics, coatings, textiles, leather, and other fields. It can function as a preservative, bactericide, and dyeing auxiliary.

Mechanism of Action

SPT exerts its antimicrobial and antifungal effects through several mechanisms:

Chelation of metal ions: By binding to essential metal ions (such as Fe²⁺ and Cu²⁺), SPT inhibits the activity of key microbial enzymes.
Cell membrane disruption: SPT increases the permeability of microbial cell membranes, leading to leakage of cellular contents and ultimately cell death.
Inhibition of energy metabolism: SPT interferes with ATP synthesis, disrupting microbial energy production and inhibiting growth.This multifaceted action makes SPT effective against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, and algae.
